Bridgeport, NJ – Defending Speedway Entertainment All Star Slingshot Champion, Michael Beckett drove to his fifth win of the season to capture the Gary Kiefert Memorial race at the Spirit Auto Center Speedway on Friday night sponsored by by Matt Kiefert and Ed Weeks. Tommy Kunsman picked up his fifth win of the season in the Hyper Racing EVO Injection 600 Micro Sprints. Billy Gray won his third win of the season in the JC Fabrication 270 Micro Sprints while Carter Mullins captured that elusive second win in the Junior Slingshots.
All Star Slingshot competitor, Matt Kiefert and Ed Weeks combined their efforts to offer a $1000 prize to the winner of the All Star Slingshot feature on Friday night. The prize was awarded to honor Matt’s dad, Gary Kiefert, a father who was well loved by his family and a veteran of the Viet Nam War. It was Kiefert’s intention to compete in his father’s memorial race but mechanical issues sidelined him during pre-race warm-ups.
Michael Beckett drew the pole, took the lead at the start and drove to the win twenty laps later, putting an end to PJ Bozowski’s three race win streak. Bozowski chased Beckett throughout the race but wasn’t able to complete the challenge for the lead. Bozowski went on to finish second followed by Brandon Oakley, Brett Bieber and Ashley Rogosch who turned her first Spirit attempt into a top five finish.
Bieber was the winner of the two earlier money races held on the Spirit quarter mile.
One week after Luke Thomas equaled the mark at four wins a piece, Tommy Kunsman came back and upped his feature win total to five in the Hyper Racing 600 Micro Sprints.
Kunsman drew the pole which is viewed by drivers as mixed blessing because while you start up front, it’s hard to tell where your competitors are racing on the track. Kunsman took care of that issue by racing away from the field, keeping the competition well behind him.
PJ Williams raced in second until challenged by current point leader, Matt Smith. Smith raced into second in the final five laps but had little time to reel in the feature winner. Williams finished third followed by Ethan Simpson and Connor Gross who broke into the top five in the late stages of the race. Olivia Haworth finished sixth with Chris Fenimore, Robert Pierce, Bubba Hughes and Gary Bozowski completing the top ten at the checkered.
Billy Gray celebrated his 30th birthday one day early as he raced to his third win of the season in the JC Fabrication 270 Micro Sprints.
Blake Esham was the early leader in the twenty lap main event. Esham led the way until a lap eight restart when Gray raced into the lead. Alex Swift raced into second before the halfway point but Gray was able to hold off the current point leader and defending champion. Lee Nardelli raced home in third followed by Esham and Joe Dopke. Dom Pomponi finished sixth with Brett Estep, Danny Wright, Jimmy Wagner and Hallie Nardelli completing the top ten at the checkered.
Carter Mullins worked hard to get to Champion Brands Victory Lane for the first time. It might have even been harder to get there the second time! He was leading the race one week earlier when mechanical woes struck.
Mullins had it all go his way on Friday night as he picked up the heat win for the Junior Slingshots and then went out and won his second feature of the season. Mullins raced to the win over Jack Jarvis who has eight wins to his credit so far this season. Austin Walls, Bradley Dennis and Nate Kampe rounded out the top five.
Four division racing returns to Spirit on Friday evening for the 600 and 270 Micro Sprints and All Star and Junior Slingshots.
