Bridgeport, NJ – It was a hot and humid night in Logan Township, New Jersey but the action on the track was even hotter as the 600 and 270 Micro Sprints and All Star Slingshots took to the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park. Steven Bracall picked up his first win of the season against the tough competition in the Hyper Racing Evo Injection 600 Micro Sprints while Nick Skias, in the 270s, and Amanda Angstadt in the Slingshots, were repeat winners on Belmont’s Garage night at the track.
Chris Fenimore and John Barnett led the field of 600s to the green flag but it would take several attempts to get the first few laps scored. Fenimore was the early race leader, leading the way through several restarts. Bracall, who started outside the fourth row, moved up to challenge on the lap five restart and came away with the lead over Fenimore, PJ Williams and Robert Pierce. “The restarts just killed me,” Fenimore related after the race.
After the early race cautions, the field got down to business and raced the remaining twenty laps without interruption.
The top three held their positions through lap ten as Billy Koch raced up to fourth ahead of Pierce. Bracall raced ahead of the field with Fenimore several car lengths ahead of the battle for third with Williams and Koch.
Along with the five laps to go sign, came the lapped cars as Bracall picked his way through traffic.
After being involved in an early race incident, Connor Gross was a man on the move. He raced with Pierce on lap seventeen to race into the top five after starting at the very rear of the field.
Bracall had command of the Cobbs Mill No. 10B as he raced to the checkered over Fenimore. Koch won the battle with Williams for third on the final lap while Gross also picked up a spot on the final lap. The top five at the checkered were Bracall, Fenimore, Koch, Gross and Williams. Both Koch and Wiliiams had tires going down in the final laps while Gross continued his string of top five finishes.
The win for Bracall was a huge boost for the BFR Motorsports team! After a lot of hard work, the results are starting to show.
With 600 Speedweeks just days away, it looked like Bracall had a headstart but it’s not in the cards for Bracall this season. “I’m working nights this week so we won’t be able to even make the race here,” Bracall added reluctantly.
The 270 Micro feature was full of its own surprises. Nick Skias worked his way into the lead with the Palmucci No 16P after John Wagner led the initial two laps. Skias led the way over Nick Walton, Dom Pomponi, Hope Karlesses and Lee Nardelli.
As Skias raced through turn four to complete lap seven, the past champion lost the handle on the No. 16P and spun, bringing out the caution. Pomponi grabbed the lead on the restart but another caution gave Walton a chance to regain the lead on the next restart.
Skias was back up to third on lap twelve and made it a three wide race for the lead with Walton and Alex Swift on lap thirteen. One lap later, Walton and Swift tangled in turn two, bringing out the caution once again. Both drivers were able to continue.
Skias led the way over Tommy Rinck. Swift and Walton were back up to third and fourth and battling for position in the final laps. Swift would come to a halt on the track, just two laps from the finish.
Skias picked up the win over Rinck, Walton, Jimmy Wagner and Mike Cogdill who was making his first start in a Micro. Cogdill actually raced a 250cc against the 270cc motors and came away with the win in his first attempt and had a great time.
“There was character in the track tonight,” Skias explained about his mishap. “And I never complain about that!”
Amanda Angstadt picked up her second win of the 2021 season in the All Star Slingshots while defending track champion, Ryan Davey made it interesting right up to the checkered flag. Davey raced the outside of the track while Michael Beckett chose the inside line as they chased Angstadt around the quarter mile.
And that’s the way they finished with Angstadt over Davey and Beckett. Tomas Mowery picked up another top five finish in fourth with Dave Morrell finishing fifth.
