Bridgeport, NJ – Tommy Kunsman, Nick Skias and Cody Kline collected Aces for their Poker Series hands with wins during the 4th hand of the 2021 Poker Series at the Spirit Auto Center Speedway on Sunday.
It was Kunsman’s first win in a year on the Bridgeport quarter mile in Hyper Racing Evo Injection 600s. His last win came during August of last year. “I’ve never won a regular race here,” Kunsman related. “All of my wins have either been Poker Series or Skyscraper wins.” And with the 2021 Skyscraper just about five weeks away, this was a good time for a tune up for the biggest race on the Spirit calendar. It was Kunsman’s ninth Spirit win.
Kunsman drew the pole for the start of the twenty-five lap main event and led from the green flag to the checkered in spite of some pressure coming from Briggs Danner and the Bodine No. 99. Danner raced from his seventh place start into second on lap six and tried several times to mount a challenge for the lead, running the inside of the track. Each time, Kunsman met the challenge and held on to the lead.
Late in the race, Danner tried to challenge from the outside on a restart but Luke Thomas was able to get a run to the inside and take over second. Colin White and Christian Bruno raced each other hard in the closing laps and finished third and fourth, respectively, with Danner rounding out the top five at the checkered. Steve Snyder, Jr. rallied to a sixth place finish after racing from the rear following a lap fourteen incident while running in third. Connor Gross finished seventh followed by Preston Latomous, Dakota Bartlet and Steven Bracall.
Nick Skias was the man to beat in 270 Micro Sprint action, winning his heat and feature event. “I had the perfect race car all night,” Skias related. “We hit the twelve second bracket for the first time tonight. I have no complaints.”
The win gave Skias a pair of Aces with one more Poker Series event to come.
Skias grabbed the lead from his front row start and led every lap from the green to the checkered. Alex Swift fiished second followed by Lee Nardelli, Jim Wagner and Dom Pomponi.
Cody Kline earned his second Poker Series win of the season in the All Star Slingshots. Kline has always liked the Spirit quarter mile because it goes well with his driving style. Work obligations keep him from running at the New Jersey facility more often but Kline usually takes advantage of the opportunities and goes home with a win. Brett Bieber chased Kline to the checkered followed by Michael Beckett, Amanda Angstadt and Ryan Davey. PJ Bozowski finished sixth followed by Ryan Harris, Matt Kiefert, Scott Philipp and Tim Franks.
