Bridgeport, NJ – The fourth annual Skyscraper event was held at the Spirit Auto Center Speedway this weekend at Bridgeport’s Motorsports Park. This year’s event was dedicated in memory of Danny Serrano who created and promoted the Skyscraper races for three years and built it into a premier event for the micro sprint competitors. The 2020 race was renamed as the Danny Serrano Skyscraper Micro Sprint Spectacular and its three days of competition certainly lived up to its name.
Three and four wide racing, slide jobs and cross-overs were in abundance as more than sixty Hyper Racing EVO Injection 600 Micro Sprints and nearly forty 270 Micro Sprints competed for starting spots in Sunday’s main events.
Tommy Kunsman, who set fast time in qualifying for both the 600 and 270 Micro Sprints, started on the pole in both events as the result of the draw. Ironically, Kunsman was the last to draw for position in both groups and the pole was the only position left.
Kunsman took the lead in the forty lap main event for the Hyper Racing EVO Injection 600s and led until the first restart following a lap twenty-nine caution. 2020 Track Champion, Damon Paul and been battling behind the leader as he challenged Kenny Miller III for the runner-up spot. Paul took over second on lap twenty-eight and then challenged Kunsman for the lead on lap thirty.
Paul waited for the right time to make his move. “I was just letting the two of them (Kunsman and Miller) battle it out,” Paul explained. “I was watching for an opportunity.” The opportunity came on lap thirty when Paul used the inside to complete the pass for the lead.
The final ten laps of the race saw Kyle Lick and Briggs Danner move to the high line around the top of the track as they started to pick their way through the top ten. Danner ran outside the top ten with around ten laps to go. He was racing for seventh with five to go but was able to gain several positions in the final laps to finish fourth.
Paul took the checkered flag and the $4,000 winner’s share of the purse. Kunsman finished second with Christian Bruno taking third after racing in the top five for most of the forty laps. Danner finished fourth with Miller in fifth. Kyle Lick finished sixth followed by Kyle Spence, Eddie Strada, Brenden Bright and Colin White.
With lessons learned in the first feature, like “stay on the bottom”, Tommy Kunsman led the field to the start of the thirty lap main event for the 270 Micro Sprints and took the lead on the start. Kunsman was pressured in the first half of the race by Jacob Hendershot who is a two fime previous Skyscraper winner.
Hendershot’s race came to an end just before the halfway mark when he the Widdoss No. 28 developed transmission problems.
There was a three car battle for second with 2020 270 Champion, Nick Skias, 2019 Champion, Alex Swift and Lee Reinhardt. The battle for second allowed Kunsman to pull away from his nearest competition.
Kunsman took the thirty lap victory and the $3,000 prize money followed by Skias, Reinhardt, Swift and Pat Bealer. 2019 Skyscraper winner, Ross Perchak finished sixth ahead of five time track champion, Tyler Reinhardt. 2019 Rookie Champion, Shea Wills finished eighth with Logan Diehl and Glenn Macomber rounding out the top ten.
One more event remains on the Spirit quarter mile for the 600 and 270 Micro Sprints and All Star Slingshots on Saturday, October 24th. Sunday, the 25th, will be used as a rain date if necessary.
