Bridgeport, NJ – Matt Smith became the eleventh different winner in the Hyper Racing 600 Micro Sprints at the Spirit Auto Center Speedway’s Friday night action. While the 600s have seen many different drivers take wins this season, the JC Fabrication Micro Sprints and the Speedway Entertainment All Star and Junior Slingshots have been dominated by a single driver in each division.
Alex Swift raced to his eleventh victory in the 270s while Brandon Oakley (9 wins) and Jack Jarvis (10) continue to rack up the wins.
Hailee Nardelli led the first lap of the Hyper Racing 600 Micro Sprint feature on Cassidy Painting night. On lap two, four time feature winner, Anthony Tramontana raced side-by-side with Nardelli to the stripe and then moved out in front on lap three.
Many thought that was the pass for the win but it was not!
Tramontana led the way over Dan Leaper, Nardelli, Robert Pierce and Smith through the first five circuits.
The caution waved just before halfway point. On the restart, Smith jumped to the outside and made his way into third before the caution waved again. On the lap fourteen restart, Smith first raced by Pierce and then dropped to the inside to challenge for the lead. Smith raced side-by-side with Tramontana before moving out in front to take the lead.
Smith led the remaining laps to take the win – his first since September of 2019. Tramontana finished second followed by PJ Williams who raced his way back to third after an early race caution. Leaper finished fourth followed by Sam LaMothe whose late race charge earned him a top five. Pierce finished sixth followed by Julius Rexrode,
Smith’s No. 33 was towed to Victory Lane after something broke in the suspension and Smith had to compensate and muscle the car to the finish. He had his hands full but was able to hold on to the lead to gain the win.
Lee Nardelli gave Alex Swift a run for the money as he battled with Swift for the early race lead. Once out in front, Swift was able to pull away from the field. Nardelli was some distance ahead of Kenny Andreas who raced in third. George Nardelli battled with Joe Dopke for fourth with Nardelli holding on to fourth all the way to the checkered. It was a first for the Nardelli brothers who both finished in the top five.
It was Swift’s 51st Spirit victory and he dedicated the win to all those who have contributed to this team but are no longer with us, including Ken Andreas whose engine and carburetor work was important to many of the 270 teams.
Joe Shone and Jonathan Laureigh led the field to the green in the All Star Slingshot feature event with Laureigh taking the lead. Laureigh led the way over PJ Bozowski, Brandon Oakley, Chris Laureigh and Nick Bilello.
Oakley took over second from Bozowski on lap eight and then set his sights on the leader. Laureigh led the way through lap fifteen but Oakley was out in front one lap later.
Oakley drove to the win – his ninth of the season. Jonathan Laureigh had his best effort of the season to finish second followed by Bozowski, Chris Laureigh and Bilello.
It was another close race in the fifteen lap Junior Slingshot feature as Carter Mullins and David Morrison led the field to the green. Mullins took the lead and lead the way for the first five laps. On lap six, Jack Jarvis was on the scene and challenging for the lead. Jarvis had the No. 680 out in front on lap eight.
Hannah Kormann battled to a second place finish over early race leader, Mullins who finished third. Last week’s feature winner, Charlie Moore finished fourth with Ann Strachko taking fifth. Tyler O’Neill, David Morrison, Brendan Lilick, Carl Taylor and Austin Walls rounded out the top ten.
And we do it all again this Friday night with the 600 and 270 Micro Sprints and All Star and Junior Slingshots to start off the Labor Day weekend.
