Bridgeport, NJ – Luke Thomas, Nick Skias, Amanda Angstadt and Brayden Morrison raced to victories in the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile events on Friday night at Bridgeport’s Kingdom of Speed. Hyper Racing EVO Injection sponsored the four division show on the second night of the 2022 season.
Luke Thomas proved how much he likes racing in mid-April with his third win on this same weekend in the last five years. Thomas’ win moved him into a tie for the All Time Feature Wins in 600 Micro Sprints – a position that had been held by Lee Nardelli for the last six seasons. Now the two drivers share the top spot.
Thomas races whenever he can behind the wheel of Kenny Vincent’s, Dave Orange powered No. 97 but his race dates are limited during the growing season when Thomas spends long hours farming. So the Delaware driver makes the most of his opportunities. He only had to improve one spot over his opening night performance when he finished second in the Dakota Steiner Memorial.
Thomas quickly raced into second from his fourth-place start and began to pressure race leader, Chris Fenimore. Thomas had the lead by the time the field completed lap five. A heated battle was in play behind the leader as Matt Smith and Gary Bozowski battled lap after lap for the third spot.
The race was red flagged with eight laps scored when a multi-car incident on the backstretch found 2021 602 Rookie of the Year, Ethan Bill upside down. It was Bill’s first outing in a 600 Micro Sprint, driving the Davis owned No. 14. Not the way Bill wanted to view the race but all drivers were okay and the field realigned for the restart.
Fenimore kept the pressure on the leader until late in the race. Following a caution with five laps to go, Bozowski raced by Fenimore to take second. Smith held off the challenges Billy Koch and Steven Snyder who raced into the top five for the first time following the restart.
Thomas took the win over Bozowski in the Cobbs Mill No. 10G. Smith finished third over Koch and Snyder. 2021 600 Champion, Connor Gross finished sixth followed by Fenimore, Kyle Spence, Wayne Scott and PJ Williams.
Nick Skias raced to the outside of Joe Dopke to take the lead in the 270 Micro Sprint feature on lap eight. Skias listened to the instructions offered by his car owner, Charlie Palmucci. “If you’re leading, don’t stop!” Even though the powerplant in the No. 16P faded late in the race, Skias was able to use his skill and experience to keep the car going to the checkered flag.
2021 270 Champion, Alex Swift finished second, closing in on the leader as they raced to the checkered flag. Lee Nardelli finished third in the Huesser No. 20 with Dopke, in the Burgess No. 71, and Tommy Rinck rounding out the top five. Billy Gray, George Nardelli, Charles Chance,Jr. Dom Pomponi and John Wagner, Jr. rounded out the top ten at the checkered.
Amanda Angstadt raced three wide with Michael Beckett and Chase Bixler to take the lead in the All Star Slingshot Feature event for her first win of the 2022 season. Angstadt’s success was a result of her ability to run her race in spite of the pressure from second place Bixler.
The defending Slingshot champion took the win over Bixler, Ryan Davey who raced his way back into third, Matt Keifert and PJ Bozowski.
Brayden Morrison raced to his second win in the Junior Slingshot competition over Cody Williamson.
Spirit Auto Center quarter mile returns to action this Friday with another four division show for the 600 and 270 Winged Micro Sprints, All Star and Junior Slingshots. Racing action follows the 7:15pm hot lap session.
