The last Fast and Furious Friday of the 2024 season is history as the Spirit Auto Center Speedway crowned its 2024 Champions in four divisions.
After picking up a win in John Vreeland’s No. 34 one week earlier, Tommy Kunsman returned on Friday night with a fresh bullet under the hood of his No. 21k and made a last lap pass out of turn four to take the win away from defending Spirit Champion, Matt Smith.
Anthony Tramontana raced to his first Hyper Racing 600 Championship with his four wins and consistent top five performance throughout the season. Tramontana’s championship season also included his first ever win in the stout 600 Micro Sprint Division.
Alex Swift raced the John & Amanda Blanda No. 15 to its thirteenth Spirit win of the season in the AC Racing Products 270 Micro Sprints as well as the team’s sixth championship in this this division.
PJ Bozowski picked up his fifth win of the season in the Speedway Entertainment All Star Slingshots, holding off the challenges of Brandon Oakley. Bozowski won the race but Oakley took home the 2024 title in the division. The two drivers battled for the point lead all season long with Oakley accumulating the most points along with his ten wins in the Jarvis Racing No. 680.
The No. 680 was the magic number in the Speedway Entertainment Junior Slingshots for Jack Jarvis who collected his thirteenth victory of the season along with his second championship title.
There were several interruptions in green flag racing at the start of the Hyper Racing 600 feature event but polesitter Shelby McLaughlin led the field through the maze of complete restarts to lead lap one. Matt Smith raced McLaughlin for the lead, nosing the No. 33 ahead as the field raced into turn three.
A lap six restart saw Ethan Simpson challenge Smith for the lead but Smith pulled ahead of the field until the red flag brought the race to a halt just before the halfway mark. All drivers involved in the incident were okay and the field went back to racing.
Kunsman raced with Simpson for second, taking over the runner-up spot on lap fifteen.
Smith had again built up a lead and Kunsman spent some time closing in on the leader. As the laps counted down, Smith’s lead shrank and he could feel the pressure from Kunsman with two laps to go. Smith took the white flag in the lead but Kunsman turned up the pressure on the final lap. Smith held the advantage into turn three but Kunsman was out in front as the pair raced out of turn four to the checkered.
It was Kunsman’s third win of the season. Smith finished second followed by Chris Fenimore, 2024 Champion, Anthony Tramontana and Ethan Simpson. Julian Rexrode finished sixth with Dan Leaper, Sam Lamothe, JT Bierman and Shelby McLaughlin completing the top ten.
Pat Bealer led the way in the 270 Micro Sprint feature for the first sixteen laps. Alex Swift was running in second and challenging, taking the lead on the backstretch of lap sixteen. Then Bealer brought out the caution as the car came to a stop in turn two.
Swift led the final trips around to the checkered to collect the win over Nick Walton who rebounded from a early race incident to finish second. Billy Gray raced back to a third place finish after bringing out the caution with three laps scored. Shea Wills finished fourth in the Palmucci No. 16P with Joe Dopke rounding out the top five.
PJ Bozowski grabbed the lead on the start of the All Star Slingshot feature event with Jonathan Laureigh racing in second. Laureigh battled with Oakley who took over second on lap seven. Oakley chased Bozowski to the checkered, challenging for the lead on several occasions but Bozowski was not to be denied.
On this night, Oakley finished second to Bozowski. Jonathan Laureigh finished in third ahead of his brother, Chris Laureigh who finished fourth. Dalton Kinsell finished fifth.
Anna Strachko led a pair of laps at the start of the Junior Slingshot feature before Jack Jarvis took the lead on lap four. Hannah Kormann quickly moved into second and chased Jarvis all the way to the checkered to finish second. Anna Strachko finished third over David Morrison and MJ Tralies.
The only action remaining on the Spirit Auto Center quarter mile is the Danny Serrano Skyscraper on Friday and Saturday, September 27th & 28th.
